Symmetry Spotlight: Kevin Scully

Kevin Scully, Co-Director of Investments, shares his Symmetry experience.

What led you to a career in finance?

I’ve always been fascinated with investments and markets. Markets are really complex adaptive systems, so there’s always something new to learn and understand. And it intersects with a lot of different areas of the world in interesting ways.

In that way, it’s kind of a puzzle you can never solve. There’s always something new to learn.

I’ve naturally always been a curious person and have always taken the approach in my career to always be learning and enhancing my skills. Even going through something like the CFA curriculum gave me a broad knowledge of finance and helps me day-to-day when I’m working with advisors and clients.

What is Symmetry’s key differentiator?

We go the extra mile in servicing our clients. Certainly in investments, which is a role I work in, advisors can trust we’re super methodical and well-researched in the investment solutions we come to market with.

But, obviously, we’re not just investments. There’s a variety of ways we can help advisors, whether that’s with marketing, back office support, or helping service our clients day-to-day.

What do you enjoy most about your job here?

What I find most rewarding is staying abreast of the investment landscape and the new products that come to market. It’s a field that’s always changing. There are new ways investors can access strategies. There are ETFs, Direct Indexing, researching the available options, and implementing those solutions to bring to market to advisors and clients. I find that work fun and fulfilling.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned professionally?

I’d say it’s the importance of always being adaptable—and that that applies not just personally to one’s career but also to a business. It’s important to not get stuck in your ways about how things are done. Individuals and businesses that can be adaptable and change with the times are the ones that are usually more successful.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Similar to the concept of the compounding of investment returns, where day-to-day the returns may not seem like much, compounded over a long time horizon that really adds up to a lot. You can apply that similar thinking to one’s career, but also to a business where each day you can make incremental improvement. Picking that framework, in looking at the big picture, really leads to success over the long term.
