Symmetry Spotlight: Melanie Krol, CPA

Melanie Krol, CPA, Associate Director of Accounting, shares her Symmetry experience.

How has your background shaped you for your role?

When I was going to college, I had no idea what I wanted to do, so I started undeclared. I wound up in sports management until I finally realized that accounting was where I truly belonged.

I worked for about six years at a public accounting firm doing auditing, and I realized that wasn’t where I wanted to spend my career. So, I started searching and I came across Symmetry.

What is Symmetry’s key differentiator?

I think our clients love the personal attention they get from us. We have a lot of talented people working here. We can tap into their potential. There’s a lot of knowledge, which ultimately helps provide a better experience for our clients.

What is your role at Symmetry Partners?

I have a more indirect role because I work in accounting. I handle day-to-day accounting and help keep the business running. The most important things I do include the quarterly close and handling the audit with our outside accounting firm. I also review financial statements, deal with all the cash, and prepare reports to help management make better decisions.

What do you enjoy most about the work you do?

I’m not really pigeonholed to one thing. We have a very lean accounting team, so I have my hands in a little bit of everything. It doesn’t get boring.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned professionally?

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. I’m one person. I don’t know everything. What’s nice here is that I could go into any one of these offices and ask a question and people would be willing to answer it.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

It may sound cliché, but I grew up playing sports. Coaches always say, “There’s no I in team.” I think that’s applicable here.

Symmetry is at its best when all the departments are working together. That includes accounting, where I work, trading, operations, marketing, investments, and relationship management. It all ties together. And we work best when we’re working as a team.

Our firm runs on talent, skill, experience, and teamwork. Watch the Symmetry Spotlight video series to learn more about the professionals behind Symmetry’s client services, marketing, and investment strategies.

Investing involves risk, including the loss of some or all of your principal. Diversification seeks to reduce volatility by spreading your investment dollars into various asset classes to add balance to your portfolio. Using this methodology, however, does not guarantee a profit or protection from loss in a declining market.
